Chapin Park was once home to Dwight Chapin’s family hog farm. The Chapins were a Wichita family, and one of the city’s founding families. The Chapins were known for their fine hogs. They were a staple of Wichita’s pork trade until the aforementioned blight swept the area. As a result of the blight, the Chapins were forced to move on. The aforementioned blight also served as a springboard for a nascent municipal trash collection service.
The Chapins were not the only hogs to grace the grounds. In fact, there were several T-hangars along the west property line. The Chapins were joined by the aptly named spinoffs of the Rawdon family, including the Spinks-Rawdon, which was a spinoff of the Rawdon family. More places to also visit by clicking here.
Among the dozens of landfills operating in Wichita in the early nineties, the Chapin hog farm stood out as the most prestigious and impressive. At its height, the place was receiving an average of 3 feet of construction debris per day. In an era when air pollution was a big deal, the place was the best place to dispose of your rubbish. It was also the only municipal landfill to have an airtight settling process. After a resurgence in the 1990s, the place was renamed to the Chapin Landfill and re-opened in 2006.
The site’s most interesting attribute is its storable ad, a surprisingly large collection of discarded food scraps, feces, and other waste. Aside from the aforementioned hog farm, the place also houses a model airplane strip, a model train set, a surprisingly impressive collection of model aircraft, and a small museum. The best part is that it’s free. Aside from the above ground facilities, the site also boasts an impressive paved trail.
